Month Long Health Challenge

Hey guys!

I’m back from Europe, and even though I had the time of my life… I need to get back on the health train.

I wasn’t the biggest fan of the food in Portugal, which left me pretty limited food options (mostly all carbs) and we didn’t really workout, other than all the walking.

So, starting today (July 8th) I will do the following things for one month:

  • 3 cycle classes per week
  • 2 days of Kayla Itsines BBG 1.0 arms and abs program (I don’t do the legs or full body because it’s too intense on my bad back and knee)
  • Cut out morning carbs and replace with a Greek yogurt, kale, and fruit smoothie
  • WATER- 1 L of H2O per day
  • Limited alcohol (only wine on Bach Monday’s)
  • Get up at 6:00 am every day
  • NO doordash, grub hub, post mates blah blah 😦

Now, as someone who has struggled with an eating disorder in the past, this isn’t about my physical appearance. There will be no before and after photos, so if that’s what you’re here for, you’re in the wrong place. This is about feeling good on the inside, detoxing from unhealthy food choices, and using endorphins as a natural anti-anxiety source.

I’ll update you guys once a week! Oh, and I am writing this post in the Uber home from my spin class this evening. So day 1 is complete!

Getting Real About Anxiety

I have anxiety. 

According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, Anxiety is THE MOST common mental health disorder in the US. Here are a couple facts I pulled from their website. 

  • 18.1% of the population is affected by anxiety disorder.
  • Only 36.9% of people suffering from anxiety receive treatment.
  • Anxiety disorders develop from a COMPLEX set of risk factors including GENETICS, LIFE EVENTS, and BRAIN CHEMISTRY. 

Why do I put these stats up? To tell you guys two things. 

  1. You’re not alone, even when you think you are. The public has stigmatized anxiety in such a negative way. You may think that you “just worry a lot” or “you feel anxious but for no reason” but the truth is… you’re not really that special (no offense!)
  2. You are not broken. Anxiety, just like any other illness, is due to an imbalance of chemicals within our brains and bodies. Certain life events make trigger this imbalance, or maybe we are more genetically prone to developing anxiety. However, it is an illness that can be fixed, or at least managed. 

So. I have anxiety. I have generalized anxiety disorder, Panic disorder, and PTSD. That is quite the mixed bag of emotions. I used to be ashamed to talk about it, but then I realized that if we keep stigmatizing mental illnesses, that number of people not seeking help is just going to increase and increase. 

People who have diabetes manage their disease, and we can manage ours as well.  I hope they  you realize that you’re not alone, and I am honestly always here to talk.

New Friends in a New City

I don’t think people really realize just how difficult it is to make friends as a working adult. I mean yea, most people have their coworkers, but we spend the entire week with them.

Making friends outside of college, while juggling a job, and just the day to day hardships of having to be an adult is rather difficult.

I’ve spent enough time wallowing in my loneliness, and I finally decided it was time to put myself out there to meet some girl friends.

There is an app called Hey VINA that is all about working women trying to meet up and make friends. It was made by girls for girls to meet other gal pals. Like any app, it’s pretty hit or miss with the people you meet, but I actually met a gal on there this past week, and we really hit it off!

Also the app called Meet Up is great, especially if you live in a large city like San Francisco. I joined a young writers group. We meet on Sundays to have coffee, hang out, write, and read each other’s work.

I will keep everyone updated as the friend hunt continues. But I’m really happy with how today went. Here are some really cool photos!

Tuesday Thrifting

Today I went to the thrift store just to pick up some goodies. I was kinda sad and that always makes me feel better! Anyways, the reason I’m sharing this is because the man who owned the store was dressed in a full leather cow boy outfit and he looked at me and said I was “more adorable than a basket of bunnies” and seeing me “made his whole week.” He then proceeded to ask me to “smoke a dooby.”

He was at LEAST 70.

Regardless, I got some great Agatha Christie novels for only a dollar each! Super sweet.

Easy Sundays

Hi guys,

As you know I live in the amazing city of San Francisco, CA. From the diverse people and food, to the history engulfing every inch of the city, it’s easy to say I LOVE WHERE I LIVE.

Sunday’s in our house are used for meal prepping as well as errand running and taking it easy. Our day ALWAYS starts off at Equinox- our gym. From there we get any errands out of the way and this week we made a couple must see stops around North Beach (aka Little Italy)

We enjoy the way Europeans live, with a slower pace in their life. We stopped at Cafe Trieste, in the heart of Little Italy for an afternoon coffee. We just sat and talked… no technology. And we didn’t drink the coffee to just drink it. We enjoyed each other’s company, and that is something that I think many relationships lack. Everyone gets so caught up in the moment that they forget why we all fell in love in the first place.

We also took a detour to Candlelight Books. One of my favorite books is Inferno by Dante and at the entrance to the store they have a quote that says, “Abandon all despair, Ye who enter here” which I thought to be quite charming especially if you are familiar with the actual quote from Inferno.

If you make your Sunday’s fun instead of dreading Monday, life gets a lot more interesting. Stay tuned for my post tomorrow about meal preppy- I know super adulty.
